I was recently looking to buy an eReader so I did some research and found what I thought was the best bang for my buck. There were a few eReaders I was looking at, including the Amazon Kindle, the newly released Kobo, a few from Sony, and the Nook from Barnes and Noble. From the title of this post, you can tell that I chose the Nook.
One thing that makes the Nook unique is it’s color screen that is at the bottom of the unit. This screen serves the purpose of a menu and a touch screen. The screen helps navigate to your books and documents really easy and fast. It also serves as a keyboard to help search words and phrases easily throughout your books, or to help you navigate to a website on the Nook’s web browser.
The device is extremely easy to use and without looking at the manual, I was able to load on a book, change up the default settings, and starting reading within a few minutes of taking the Nook out of its box.
Some of the cooler features is the ability to shop and download new books right from the device, play some games, play music, browse the Internet, and the ability to keep reading right from where you left off last time on any book.
Pros:
- Easy to read screen
- Easy navigation with the screen on the bottom.
- Web browser if you’re not in the mood to read a book.
- Buy and read books right from the device (no computer needed!).
- Plays games and music.
- A long 10 day battery life (this is just reading the books, not running the wifi, playing games and such).
- Overall aesthetics are simple, and easy on the eyes. You can also get cases to suit you and your personality.
- Good price at $149.99.
Cons:
- Menu and the screen can respond slow sometimes.
- Browser is black and white (really though, its an eReader, I’m not too concerned).
- Slow loading times on books.
- Flipping pages can be slow now and then.
As you can see the Pros outweigh the Cons. I don’t have many negative things to say about the Nook as it does it’s job as an eReader very well; it shouldn’t disappoint. Also, down the road look for updates to improve the speed of the operating system and further increase the value of the unit. I would recommend this device to anyone looking for a simple eReader under a budget. If you have a little bit more cash to spend I’d recommend one of Sony’s touchscreen eReaders, the new Kindle, or the iPad.
The nook comes in two different models. The $149.99 dollar model that I purchased only has Wifi (OH NO!). If you don’t mind spending a little bit more money, you can purchase the $199.99 which gets you on AT&T’s 3G network so you can download books and browse the Internet anywhere you want; still not a bad deal at all.
