One of the hardest photos to take are sports photos. The reason is, unless you’re photographing golf, sports move extremely fast. You need to be ready at all times to get the goal, the kick, the save, or the hit. Your camera has to be really good as well to get the best shutter speed and still be able to get a lot of light into your lens. A tripod and some great filters and lenses help a lot as well. If done right however, the shots you can get can show more emotion than almost any other type of photography. You can capture the struggle, desperation, motivation, and joy of sports in your camera. Take a look at some great examples below and click the image to see the sources.
F1 2008 Montreal
This photo was taken by me. A friend and I went to Montreal for the F1 Grand Prix and I snapped this one as I was going over a bridge. Its not nearly as good as the others coming up, but I thought I would show it anyways.
Subaru in the Cochrane Winter Rally, 2009
This event took place in Alberta Canada in 2009. A Subaru had flipped over making for a great shot, as long as you don’t die in the process.
Moto GP
This shot was taken by Edmonton Photographer Brian Neufeld. A great action shot of a bike going right under him.
Skateboarding
My cousin, who is actually a photographer, took this one while on a skateboarding trip down in Orlando. He does some great work.
Rangers vs. Wild
A really cool photo that was taken during a Ranger/Wild game. The ice and snow make this photo look great.
Ovechkin
It’s amazing how much their stick bends when they wind up for a shot. Just crazy.
Desperation
Edmonton Oilers goalie, Dwayne Roloson, makes a desperation stretch to cover the puck after it squeaked past him.
Boogaard KOs McGrattan
Really cool shot as the KO punch is being landed. Great timing.
Indy Kicker
My favorite NFL team: the Indianapolis Colts. Cool shot just as the kicker kicked the ball.
Stiff Arm
A great running play as this football player starts a stiff-arm on his opponent.
Football Tackle
This photo really pops after using the software that was used to blue the background. It looks pretty cool in my opinion.
College Football Running Back
The emotion captured on the faces look really awesome as the running back is giving it his all to get as many yards as possible.
Air Canada
While in Toronto, Vince Carter was known as Air Canada. This was the dunk that got him that reputation as he soars over everyone almost horizontal to the ground and slams the ball down. This was utterly amazing.
Chase Utley
One of the great hitters on Cincinatti, Chase Utley is just about to hit this ball. A great, well timed photo… Kudos.
Williams
This photo was taken be Bob Martin. He is one of the best sports action photographers out there. He has a great profile and I pull this photo out from there. Stunning everything.
Snowboarding in Nagano
Nagano, 1998: the first year that snowboarding took place in the Olympics. This is a great shot, taken by Bob Martin again. Of course a Canadian would go on to win the snowboarding downhill event.
Maui Surfer
I’ve never surfed before, but I would think it would absolutely terrifying as you would be so small against waves like this.
Bend It Like Beckham
Or hit it right at the defender. Either way, it makes for a great photo.
Dangerous Catch
This catch could have been dangerous if one player didn’t give up so the other could catch it.
Great Save
This photo was taken a while ago but it looks great as the goalie makes a terrific save back in the day.
I hope you liked them. There will be even more down the road!
