I really enjoy doing the road trip thing and after traveling to Boston Massachusetts, I decided to venture the other way from where I live to Indianapolis Indiana.
First Impressions
When I first arrived in Indianapolis, I wasn’t overly impressed. The city looks like any other city; a few big buildings surrounded by smaller buildings. Getting into the city showed that Indianapolis had a lot more to offer. As you travel downtown you see how interesting the city really is. The city is filled with awesome architecture and each building is etched and carved with outstanding detail which has a distinct American appeal to it. The city is also rich in American history and showcases many government buildings, all of which are interesting to see and visit.
What To Do
The first thing you should do is go straight to Monument Circle. This is the center of downtown and you will find the Soldiers and Sailer’s Monument, which is a tall monument that you can actually go up to the top of it and look around. From the top you’ll see where you should go next:
Lucas Oil Stadium is a place any football fan should go. This is the home of the Indianapolis Colts and is a huge stadium. If you can catch a game I would suggest doing so as they are one of the best teams in the NFL and their fans are some of the most passionate of the game. There is also a great Pro Store there where you can get some great authentic gear.
If you’re in to history at all, be sure to check out the War Memorial Museum. You have the opportunity to go on a free self-guided tour which takes you through every war that the U.S.A. has ever participated in. You can read about each place and see authentic pieces and collectibles from each war.
After that history lesson, be sure to go south of Monument Circle where you will find Circle Mall. This mall has some pretty good stores and is pretty big to help calm the nerves of any shopping addict. In the same area, you will find a lot of the government buildings in Indianapolis. These are pretty great structures which will prove to be some great photo opportunities.
Finally, lets talk about some night life. There are many breweries, sports bars, and music bars that you should check out if you’re into the nightlife scene. The Slippery Noodle is an interesting choice as this is a good jazz club that will keep you awestruck late into the night. If jazz isn’t your thing, head over a few blocks to Howl At The Moon where you will get to experience a piano bar where two guys will play almost any song you can think of with a request and some money. I would recommend checking these out or heading to Rock Bottom or Champps if you’re into normal bars.
